The L.E. Smith Glass Company, founded in 1907 by "Lew" Smith in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, is renowned for its diverse range of glass products. Initially, the company produced items such as mustard jars, jelly jars, and even headlight lenses for the Model T Ford. After relocating to Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, in 1910, L.E. Smith expanded its offerings to include milk glass pieces like figural animals, vases, and planters, as well as novelty items such as miniature glass pianos and telephone-shaped candy containers.
In the 1920s, L.E. Smith began producing decorative glassware, introducing lines like "Chalcedony Ware," which featured raised decorations in attractive green colors. The company gained prominence for its carnival glass in the 1970s and 1980s, with popular patterns including "Moon and Star," "Pinwheel and Hobstar," and "Whirling Star" (also known as "Galaxy").
L.E. Smith's product line was extensive, encompassing punch bowl sets, candleholders, baskets, and holiday-themed items. The company also produced commemorative plates featuring historical figures and events. After nearly a century of operation, L.E. Smith Glass Company closed its doors in 2004.
