Attributed to the Tao Kuang Period (also spelled Daoguang period) refers to the reign of the Daoguang Emperor, who ruled China from 1820 to 1850 during the Qing Dynasty.

Cricket keeping in China dates back over 1,000 years, becoming especially popular during the Tang (618–907)and Song (960–1279) dynasties. The tradition was associated with literati culture, emperors, and the upper class, but eventually spread across all levels of society. Crickets were admired for their chirping (song crickets) or fighting prowess (fighting crickets), and were often seen as symbols of vitality, courage, and good fortune.

Antique cricket boxes are now collectible items, valued for their craftsmanship and historical significance.
