This Marie Toya Jemez Storyteller Pueblo Indian Pottery, with 5 Jemez Children and a Papoose, Watermelon and Pot is awesome. Circa 1970's, this Native American pottery, originated in 1964 at Cochiti Pueblo to honor the oral tradition and the importance of storytelling in Pueblo culture. This innovation quickly gained popularity, and many other potters from various Pueblos adopted the style, making storyteller figurines the most popular item in Pueblo art.
This storyteller figurine was made and signed by Marie Toya from the Jemez Pueblo. She makes all of her storytellers from all natural materials she collects from the Pueblo. She says her favorite time is when she is making each piece, "It makes me think of what to give each child and what the Grandfather or Grandmother is telling them. Marie has 20 years of experience and has been featured in the book "Pueblo and Navajo Contemporary Pottery".
The storyteller figurine represents the oral tradition, a vital part of Pueblo culture where stories were the primary way to transmit history, knowledge, and values. This storyteller measures approximately 7-1/8" Tall 4-1/4 Wide" (side to side) x 4-1/4" Wide (front to back). Very interesting and unique decor piece. Perfect addition for any collection / display or a fabulous gift for a collector of folk art pottery. Wonderful piece of art.
